Day 131 - Windows are in!

Some still need to have the glass changed for obscure glass and the builders have asked to leave the french doors out for the moment to make things easier for them.

We're very pleased with the windows, they're very sleek, just what we wanted.

Day 127 - Busy, busy day

Today is a very busy day at the property. Henry & Sons are in fitting the windows downstairs, the plumber is laying the trays for the underfloor heating upstairs, the builders are starting on the flat roof over the lounge and we met with the architect to go through all the changes we've made so we can get some updated drawings - phew!

Day 127 - Windows being fitted

Exciting! - The windows are being fitted by Henry & Sons over the next 3 days

They seem to be fitting the frames in first (with a fair amount of pushing and shoving)

And then will add the glass in afterwards...

Even the trickle vents don't look so bad.

Day 101 - Henry's Son

This week we met with Peter from Henry & Sons, our window suppliers, to measure up.

That's Peter on the right

We also met our chippie, the unusually monikered Pelham. I'm interested in unusual/old names from my family history studies and this isn't one I'd come across before. According to a quick search on t'internet Pelham is an old English name which may mean tannery town which is slightly less glamorous.
I also found that Pelham is the first name of P.G. Wodehouse and that according to the wonderful, if grammatically incorrect site, YourNotMe there are only 62 people called Pelham in the UK.

No pics of Pelham but here's a slightly blurry pic of his great work on the 5th Bedroom roof

And here's the 5th bedroom

View from the 5th bedroom doorway looking forwards.

High level window window in our bedroom which we're hoping to turn into an opening window, albeit with occluded glass, otherwise we have a ventilation problem in the master bedroom as the french windows aren't tall enough to include a top opening window without looking odd.

And here's the french window opening

I also made myself somewhat unpopular with Graham, our master brickie as we decided the main bathroom window (that he'd already built) wasn't big enough - eek! For some reason our architect John had drawn the window pretty small on the plans and it was only seeing it in real life that we realised it would be better if it was bigger. It should only cost us a replacement lintel to change though.

Day 52 - Wembley Windows

Now the hole issue is fixed the decision on the windows becomes more pressing.

We've had a couple of quotes for UPVC windows but we're really not thrilled by the designs. They all have very wide and chunky frames - it seems that's just they way they are.

Peter (from Fowles) had mentioned a Polish company they'd worked with on a couple of jobs in London who offered quality aluminium windows at a lot less than other companies and got them to quote for our job. The quote wasn't too much more than the UPVC but we hadn't seen the windows - were they really very different to UPVC?

So this week we decided to go up to London to check out the windows in their factory/showroom.

The company are in Wembley and have the very English name of Henry & Sons but everyone we met was Polish.

They offer two types of aluminium windows (as well as UPVC) but one, Beaufort, is more suited to residential use.

We really liked them, the width and profile of the frames is much narrower and more elegant than the UPVC, if elegant is a word you can use about windows!

They offer bevelled or flat options and in a choice of colours - we'll probably go for white. The finish is powder coated so no maintenance required and the windows are guaranteed for 10 years.

We then had a look round the factory (where they make the windows) to see some finished windows

Flat profile in Black.

Day 36 - Things are moving

Quick update - Shaun has heard from the architect who has heard from the structural engineer who has finished our design - hooray.

The removal folk are coming on Thursday - eek!

We have to decide on windows, soon. UPVC or aluminium, except we haven't seen the ali ones....
